elmwood community center GROUNDBREAKING
On May 25, the City held a ground-breaking ceremony for the reconstruction of the Elmwood Community Center, which has been closed for 3 years. When the last of the asbestos is removed, the interior renovations will begin. The City has budgeted $3.25M for this project. Read the City's news story online.
Although comments by the Mayor and other officials were upbeat, the overall sentiment seemed subdued. Many, many community members have been fighting to save and revitalize the Community Center since 2007. The current renovations are expected to take a year to complete, so the Center will not reopen until 2023.
The Community Center has been at the heart of our neighborhood since the early 80's when the City purchased the building from Temple Beth-Israel. Many residents have fond memories of the activities and programs offered at the Center. Then, the mid-2000s saw the start of its decline. Throughout the years many community members have fought to keep it open without success. Will the current renovations see the rebirth of our Community Center into a vibrant, welcoming gathering place for all residents?
Many questions remain. How will we as a community continue to be engaged in the revitalization of the Elmwood Community Center? Your comments and ideas are welcome!

New gateway to our park
This fall, construction will begin on the Gateway Center at the Broad Street entrance of the park. The state-of-the-art structure designed by INFORM studio, will sit atop the long vacant El Fogon property, activating a blighted space into a thriving community asset.
As part of a community engagement process that began back in 2019, the public is invited to attend a virtual meeting on September 14, 2020 at 5:30 pm to learn more about this transformative investment in Broad Street. During the meeting, participants will be able to meet the design team, preview the site designs, and participate in a question and answer session moderated by Parks Superintendent Wendy Nilsson. Representatives from the Department of Planning and Development, and City of Providence Latino Ambassador group will also be on hand.

There was also a special a special guest from the North Pole and the ENA collected donations for the RI Food Bank.
